Saturday 8 June saw the 2019 New Forest Film Festival awards held in Brockenhurst where industry specialists and filmmakers gathered to watch winning entries in a variety of genres from comedy to horror, and documentary to music.
The festival competition celebrated films of under 10 minutes from around the world at international and student levels. Music videos, animation, and no-budget films, were amongst the almost one hundred short films submitted for the award from across the globe.
The judging panel, including the New Forest residents of film critic Mark Kermode, TV presenter Jon Cuthill, and Velvet Pictures director Keith English, spent over 14 hours watching the shortlisted films and had a tough choice to make for the winners.
Velvet sponsored the Best New Forest University Student Short and the Student Comedy awards alongside industry notables (and Velvet colleagues) Mcasso Music, who sponsored the award for International Music Video and Cinelab who sponsored the International Animation section. On behalf of the Festival, Velvet would like to thank both companies for taking part and supporting young filmmakers.
The winning films were shown at venues across the district during the week’s New Forest Film Festival amongst many other film screenings and movie-related events. 14 winners received a limited edition ’Derek’, featuring the Festival’s signature donkey on a wooden award made from beech, purpleheart and oak woods from sustainable sources.
The nine-day film festival, ran from 8th until 16th June 2019.
New Forest District Council’s project ‘Film:New Forest’ to encourage filming in the area partnered up with film makers Gary Wronecki and Michael van Koetsveld, to organise the awards as part of New Forest Film Festival.
Velvet are part of the steering committee for the festival to return, bigger and bolder 19th – 27th September 2020 – details can be found here.
